Great relaxing loungy music for those who enjoy a little club mix and the exotic Far East music. Having personally own a copy of this (actually 2), it's highly recommended. One of my favorites by far.

I also own this set and will definitely get the 2004 soon enough. I didn't particularly like the 1st of the 2 CD's in the 2-set collection, but it's still a chilled out lounge classic.

buy this MY SPIRIT FLIES TO YOU
CD by Decca
August 29, 2006
Ten years ago, Lama Jamyang Tashi Dorje founded a Buddhist Monastery in Catalonia, where many spiritually inclined individuals have since repaired to de-stress and seek healing of various sorts. It is safe to assume that they did not accomplish such while listening this bizarre opus, which can best be described as mantras meet Eurovision. Canned-sounding synths, charley-horsed programmed percussion and perkily mundane pop vocals are piled on top of choirs of chanting monks, but the modern and traditional elements not only have nothing in common but actually seem mutually antagonistic. For what it's worth, His Holiness the Dalai Lama has apparently "acknowledged the success" of the album and even congratulated the protagonists. Of course, Spain was also where Chant by the Benedictine Monks Of Santo Domingo de Silos, perhaps the most unlikely European-based international craze this side of the Macarena, originated. But the present release has more to do with Chantmania, a parody of the latter, in which the California-based Benzedrine Monks Of Santo Domonica, who are rumored to seek the divine through sleep deprivation, essayed selections like "Losing My Religion" and "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?" --Christina Roden

buy this SANCTUARY: MUSIC FROM A ZEN GARDEN
CD by Riley Lee
July 18, 2000
As peaceful and enchanting as a sunset's afterglow on a cloudless summer evening, the gentle music of Riley Lee (playing shakuhachi flute, an instrument traditionally used by Japanese monks) and Bert Moon (on koto, a 13-string zither) stirs a warm, caressing breeze that calms the spirit and stills the mind. Lee, an Australian, is one of the few non-Japanese musicians to be acknowledged as a dai shihan (grand master) of the shakuhachi, a fairly primitive flute made from a bamboo root. His talents are artfully displayed on this tranquil assortment of improvisational duets with Moon, recorded in 1984 and first released in 1991 as a meditative cassette titled Evening Mist. Lee's elegant, prolonged tones are gentle to the point of weightlessness, residing in comfortable low and middle ranges without sounding a shrill note. Moon, though not credited on the recording's front cover, admirably handles an egalitarian role throughout the disc's 61 minutes, handsomely complementing Lee's cerebral textures with dignified, unobtrusive accents. Listeners raised on Occidental music will find little alien about Lee and Moon's graceful, unhurried duets, ideal for periods of restfulness or contemplation. --Terry Wood
