Summary
"Anger be now your song immortal one...", March 1, 2005
Reviewer: Octavius (United States)

Homer's Iliad has been hailed as a literary jewel for the past 2900 years and there's a reason for it: it's a timeless look into the human condition as recited by a poet of immense talent. Fitzgerald provides a good translation that isn't weighed down as those of earlier writers with your "thys", "thees", "shalts", "doths", etc. Although some his word choices can be awkward such as 'wily-nily' and such, his translation is more fluid than those of many other writers and allows the reader to appreciate the meter much better without being weighed down with either archaic or over-modern English. Although the characters in 'The Iliad' may have lived over 3000 years ago, their emotions, hopes, and dreams are still relevant to humanity today: Firtzgerald is one the best authors to bring them to life for the English reader. So enjoy this masterpiece of literature in one of the best translations available to date...

Summary
FROM THE PUBLISHER
Gripping listeners and readers for more than 2,700 years, The Iliad is the story of the Trojan War and the rage of Achilles. Combining the skills of a poet and scholar, Robert Fagles brings the energy of contemporary language to this enduring heroic epic.
If The Iliad is the world's greatest war story, then The Odyssey is literature's greatest evocation of every man's journey through life. Here again, Fagles has performed the translator's task magnificently, giving us an Odyssey to read aloud, to savor, and to treasure for its sheer lyrical mastery.

Each volume contains a superb introduction with textual and critical commentary by renowned classicist Bernard Knox.

Summary
From The Critics

William Arrowsmith
"The finest translation of Homer ever made into the English language."

Gilbert Highet
"Certainly the best modern verse translation."

"This magnificent translation of Homer's epic poem . . . will appeal to admirers of Homer and the classics, and the multitude who always wanted to read the great Iliad but never got around to doing so."--The American Book Collector

Peter Green
"Perhaps closer to Homer in every way than any other version made in English.", The New Republic

Robert Fitzgerald
"The feat is decisive that it is reasonable to foresee a century or so in which nobody will try again to put the Iliad in English verse."

Hugh Lloyd-Jones
"Each new generation is bound to produce new translations. [Lattimore] has done better with nobility, as well as with accuracy, than any other modern verse translator. In our age we do not often find a fine scholar who is also a genuine poet and who takes the greatest pains over the work of translation.", New York Review of Books

Summary
A Flowing, Timeless Epic, March 14, 2001
Reviewer: A reader

"The Odyssey" helps to consolidate Greek myth. Written in a sumptuous and poetic style, it loquaciously stirs at the heart of Ancient Greece; It combinies myth with historicity, and thus exists in the twilight realm of legend where cultures and cosmologies are born. For Greek culture, so prolific and rich, "The Odyssey" can be seen as a sort of Old Testament of Hellenics. When a writer can present fanciful tales with such force that the reader begins to overlook their plausibility, when a mind can capture the essence of a culture as a cohesive, glorious epic- we have "The Odyssey".

This Fitzgerlad version has not overlooked the 2,500 year old approaches and problems in the translation. On the contrary, after volumnious scholarly survey of the history, translations, mythology, language, archaeology and style of "The Odyssey", Fitzgerlad here presents the most accurately polished edition outside of the Greek language. An enthralling tour de force, "The Odyssey" will be a gem on your bookshelf.

FROM THE CRITICS
Walter Kaufmann
[Lattimore's] Odyssey is his masterpiece.

Rex Warner
[Lattimore's] complete Homer is indeed a splendid achievement, and I shall be very far from being alone in regarding it...as the best translation there is of a great, perhaps the greatest, poet. —New York Times Book Review

Paul Engle
Lattimore's translation of Homer's Odyssey is the most eloquent, persuasive, and imaginative I have seen. It reads as if the poem had originally been written in English.

Summary
Book Description
When Walt Whitman self-published Leaves of Grass in 1855 it was a slim volume of twelve poems and he was a journalist and poet from Long Island, little-known but full of ambition and poetic fire. To give a new voice to the new nation shaken by civil war, he spent his entire life revising and adding to the work, but his initial act of bravado in answering Ralph Waldo Emerson's call for a national poet has made Whitman the quintessential American writer. This rich cross-section of his work includes poems from throughout Whitman's lifetime as published on his deathbed edition of 1891, short stories, his prefaces to the many editions of Leaves of Grass, and a variety of prose selections, including Democratic Vistas, Specimen Days, and Slang in America.
